Alabamians head to the polls on Tuesday, May 24, with a variety of statewide and local public offices and a statewide constitutional amendment on the ballot.

Only registered voters in Alabama can vote in the May 24 primary election. The last day to register to vote in the primaries was May 9 and the last day to request a mail-in ballot for the primary election was May 19. The last day to hand-deliver an absentee ballot is May 23; mail-in ballots returned by mail must be received by noon on May 24.

Among the races on Alabama’s ballot are a Republican primary for the U.S. Senate, as well as party nominations for governor and state constitutional officers, state Supreme Court and judicial posts. locals, members of the state legislature, seats of county commissions and other county offices, and party executive committees.

The only statewide constitutional amendment is a proposal to issue $85 million in bonds to fund improvements to Alabama’s state parks.

Polling places statewide open at 7 a.m. on May 24 and close at 7 p.m. student, military or tribal card.

Depending on the outcome of the races, a second round will take place on June 21. Under Alabama law, if there are three or more candidates in a primary race and no candidate receives a majority of the votes cast, then the first two vote-getters go head-to-head in the second tower for the nomination of the party. Candidates from both parties are facing each other in the November 8 general election.

In the second round, voters must stick to the party they chose in the primary. It is not permitted to “cross over” to vote in the second round of the other party. The last day to register to vote in the second round is June 6.
