Debenham Road Speed Limit Change: Campaign Gaining Momentum After Serious Crashes (2026)

A campaign for a speed limit change on Debenham Road, near Stowmarket, is gaining momentum. The Cut It To 40 Campaign has been advocating for a reduction in speed limits on this rural stretch of road, known as a 'Grand Prix track', for several months. After multiple serious crashes and six people reportedly hospitalised in the last year, campaign leader Simon Oldfield met with Suffolk County Council to discuss the issue. Suffolk County Council leader Matthew Hicks has indicated that a speed limit change is possible, suggesting a reduction from 60mph to 40mph on Blacksmiths Lane and Debenham Road. However, Debenham Road would not qualify for a 30mph limit. Simon Oldfield describes the current speed limit as 'ridiculous and dangerous', and fears there will be deaths if no action is taken. He notes 37 safety hazards along the two-mile-long road, including five road junctions, multiple entrances to farms, businesses and houses, and nine sharp bends. Almost 80 local people have signed a petition, and campaigners are in advanced negotiations with the council to address the problem. A spokesman for Suffolk County Council has acknowledged the concerns and is prepared to work with the parish council to explore options for improving safety, which could include signage improvements and a potential speed limit change. The campaigners are hopeful that a reduced speed limit will be approved to safeguard road users and residents alike, as too many drivers treat the road like a 'Grand Prix track', leading to serious accidents and hospitalisations.
