Aaron Siegel and Taylor Garrigan, the founders of the popular Home Team BBQ restaurants in South Carolina and Aspen, CO, first met at a Widespread Panic concert in 2002. This fall, they will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their establishment's opening by bringing together members of that band's musical community. The three-day, two-location event will take place in Charleston, SC, next month, kicking off at Home Team BBQ's Downtown Charleston spot on Thursday, September 24, and Friday, September 25, with a variety of unique artist configurations.
On the first night, Charleston-based Americana act Guilt Ridden Troubadour and South Carolina-bred, Nashville-based artist Mac Leaphart will perform. The second night will feature longtime Widespread Panic associates Bloodkin and soul/funk act Shonuff, who will perform in the restaurant's courtyard. During Bloodkin's set, Williams Tonks, a dobro player from Athens, GA, who played with founding Panic drummer Todd Nance in the Romper Stompers, and Widespread Panic percussionist Sunny Ortiz will join in. Additionally, Davis Coen will perform during the set break.
The final day of the celebration will take place on Saturday, September 26, at The Refinery, tapping into both the South Carolina and Widespread Panic musical communities. The show will feature sets by Paul Cauthen, SCAM Allstars, WERI Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreation Industry, and Mac Leaphart & Reid Stone. Two of these acts are veritable supergroups. The SCAM Allstars include Cameron Williams, Sam Holt, Randolph Turner, Jason Fuller, Stephen Spivey, and Richard Proctor, with special guests like Jerry Joseph, Eric Carter, Eric Martinez, Winfield Smith, Jon Eldridge, and Ortiz.
WERI Workhorses of the Entertainment/Recreation Industry brings together Ortiz, Ben Reynolds, William Tonks, and Rob Keller. Ortiz recently collaborated with Holt, a former Widespread Panic guitar tech and sub-lead guitarist, in Chattanooga, TN, during a stop on the annual Michael Houser tribute run. This tribute honors Houser, who passed away on August 10, 2002.
This event is a testament to the enduring connection between the music and the people who create it, and it promises to be a memorable celebration of the past two decades of Home Team BBQ and the rich musical history it has been a part of.
