Measles Exposure in Columbia, SC: What You Need to Know (2026)

Attention, everyone! A serious health alert has emerged in Columbia, South Carolina, as a potential measles exposure has been reported amid a concerning outbreak in the region.

According to the South Carolina Department of Public Health, an individual who was unknowingly infected with measles visited the South Carolina State Museum on January 2. This visit raises alarm bells since many individuals might have been in contact with this person without realizing they were carrying the virus.

Health officials are urging anyone who was at the museum during the hours of 1 to 5 p.m. that day to consider themselves potentially exposed to measles. It's important to note that the incubation period for measles can extend up to three weeks, which means that symptoms may not appear right away.

"Individuals who were present at this location and lack immunity could start showing early signs of measles at any moment now," the agency warned on Tuesday. They strongly encourage anyone who visited the museum during that time frame to reach out to a healthcare provider if they develop symptoms or if they are not vaccinated against measles.

The health department has advised those potentially exposed to keep a close watch for symptoms until January 23. Symptoms to look out for include a persistent cough, a runny nose, red, watery eyes, and fever. These initial symptoms can be followed by a distinctive rash that typically appears two to three days later, starting from the face and then spreading across the body.

On a broader scale, the Department of Public Health reported 124 new measles cases just this Tuesday, bringing the total number of cases in the current outbreak to 434. Notably, this outbreak has primarily affected the Upstate region of South Carolina.

WIS has reached out to the South Carolina State Museum for further comments regarding this health concern.
